Abia State, Nigeria and the entire Nigerian academia have been thrown into mourning following reports of the death of Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, an industrialist, educationist and politician who founded Gregory University, Uturu.

The death of the billionaire businessman and former Abia governorship candidate was announced by Innov8 Hub and subsequently publicised on Monday, October 19, 2026, by a former chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The announcement has drawn attention to Ibe’s contributions to higher education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and political development, particularly in Abia State, where he built a strong public profile.

Gregory Ibe’s Contributions to Education and Business

Born on December 10, 1963, in Kaduna, Nigeria, Ibe hailed from Uturu in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.

He established himself as a businessman and academic before venturing into politics, combining his commercial interests with initiatives aimed at education, innovation and human capital development.

One of his most prominent achievements was the establishment of Gregory University, Uturu, a private university created to expand access to higher education and equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and practical skills needed for their careers.

The institution became a significant part of his legacy, reflecting his interest in strengthening educational opportunities in Abia State and beyond.

Ibe also founded Innov8 Hub, an innovation and startup incubation centre in Abuja. The initiative reflected his commitment to entrepreneurship, technology and the development of solutions to emerging economic and social challenges.

In academia, he held a doctorate in Management and served as a visiting professor at several institutions, maintaining an involvement in scholarship alongside his business activities.

Ibe’s Political Career in Abia State

Beyond business and education, Ibe played an active role in Abia State politics as a member of APGA.
