NATIONAL HONOUR AWARDS: CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE SAYS NO

 


I DON'T WANT SUCH NATIONAL HONOUR 

Recall that few days ago, those penciled down by the president for the National Honors Award 2022 were honoured with medals of their various honorary designation.

In the list were various citizens and foreigners who were picked based on diverse yardsticks dimmed fit for nation building and image projection. Among over 450 of them was the prolific author and distinguished scholarship Ngozi CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE who was billed to receive ORDER of the FEDERAL REPUBLIC (OFR) from the president, this was not long  after she received Harvard University’s W.E.B. Du Bois Medal on October 6, 2022, an award considered the highest honour in the field of African and African-American studies. She equally has had several awards of different kinds from institutions, universities and others.

Unfortunately, she quietly declined the national honour through the statement that came from her communication team Omawumi Ogbe which states that;

“The author did not accept the award and, as such, did not attend the ceremony. She, however, did not want to create undue publicity around it, so her non-acceptance was conveyed privately,”

Meanwhile, rumours flying prior this confirmation had a two way speculation that she accepted while others said she rejected.

Chimamamda Ngozi Adichie is not the first to reject such Honour, one of the Nigerian cum African's greatest writer Late Prof. Chinua Achebe rejected same Award in 2004 under Obasanjo, and 2011 under Jonathan on the ground that the affairs of the country is not properly handled, late legal colossus Gani Fahwehimi also rejected the award too. 

At this point, no one knows why Adichie rejected hers which she never disclosed, but I'm sure the reason will not be far from that of those who rejected it earlier which to every sane being is conspicuous.

Perhaps, in the fullness of time, we might know.
