RASHID YEKINI: Great Patriot for his country


He was called 'Gangling Rashid Yekini' Because of his height. We was talk at well over 6 feet. He scored more goals for Nigeria MORE than any other National Team footballer. Yekini was a deadly finisher in the Nigerian Super Eagles attack. 


He never missed an opportunity to feature for Nigeria. In one such occasion he literally bolted from his club in Portugal- VICTORIA Setubal to come home to play an International Match for Nigeria. When he returned he was made to pay a fine by his CLUB. 


Yekini walked up to the Coach and said:


"Next time I will still go home to play for Nigeria  even if Nigeria is playing against COCKROACHES. Back home in Nigeria they LOVE me and care about me. Here, NOBODY cares. All you want is for me to play well and win matches. Then you care about Money which I don't care about".


Then later he fell out with the care taker of his house in Ibadan. The care taker had increased the rent on his house without telling him and justified it on the fact that the rent on his house was one of the cheapest in the City of Ibadan. Rashid Yekini would have none of that. He promptly sacked his care taker for increasing the rent on his house without his permission. He was said to regularly give out large sums of money from his earnings to very indigent people in Ibadan and his hoke town in Kwara State. 


The whole country mourned when Rashid Yekini died 4th of May 2012 at the age of 48.
